Without going into a lot of history about the tithe, I simply remind us that the tithe existed before the law was brought into effect. The tithe was demonstrated through Abraham, of whom it was said, He is the father of our faith. When Abraham presented the tithe unto Melchisedec, he did not take it of his own goods and own profit to do so. Abraham took the tithe from the spoils of his conquest of Sodom’s conquerors. Abraham presented to Melchisedec a remnant of those spoils before returning the rest to the king of Sodom.
We know from a study in Hebrews that Melchisedec represents the mysterious priesthood of Jesus (6:20), and Abraham represents those who receive the promise of righteousness by faith (Gal.3:7). The king of Sodom represents the world and its system, and the conquerors could represent the god of this world – the principalities and powers with whom we do battle, establishing the kingdom of heaven, setting the captives free. But what does the tithe represent?
While still under the law, the Israelites were told to “bring all the tithes into my storehouse that there may be meat in my house...” I propose that the tithe represents the remnant of souls we are to present to our King.
Isaiah cried, “Though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall be saved.” “Many are called, few are chosen.” “Wide is the path that leads to destruction, but narrow the way that leads to life and few there be that find it.”
When Jesus told the story of the farmer who loaned out his vineyard then sent his servants to collect fruit from the tenants…James picks up on the story and says, “The husbandman waits for the precious fruit (remnant) of the earth, and has long patience for it” (5:7). Then Jesus tells the story of the wedding feast. But when the king discovered that the wedding was not furnished with guests, he bid his servants to go into the highways and byways…”that my house may be full.” So the servants went into the streets and lanes and brought in the halt and lame, the poor and the blind – the refuse of the world, the remnant.
Jesus told us to pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers. So our prayer this last year has been:
Father stir up a heart of compassion within us that we will act on behalf of the hurting, the dying, the needy, the lost, the poor, the broken… Lord of the harvest send forth labors into the harvest…that there may be fruit in your house…bringing glory to your name.
Let’s bring the true tithe unto the Lord – the remnant of this earth, the ones that will believe in his name and be saved.
