...we all do. Quirks, idiosyncrasies, whatever you call them, those things we do, say, or think that make us different.
One of mine is the word "share." All to often, I hear that someone is "sharing" a word, a testimony, a praise report, or a scripture. Doesn't the word "share" mean "I'll let you have some, but I keep some for myself," or "I'll let you use this thing, but I want it back."? Where in the Bible does it tell us to "share" like this? Aren't we told to give? Did Jesus "share," or did He give?
Another thing that gets me is when preachers fish for amens. I'm sure you've heard or seen this happen. A preacher says something that sounds good, and when nobody reacts, he'll say, "Amen?" Whenever this happens, I wonder if the preacher is just looking for someone to stroke his ego, or maybe he's unsure about the truth of what he said and he wants someone else to confirm it for him. Now, I can understand if the preacher is truly concerned with whether or not anyone is understanding or accepting the Word. But if the preacher is truly bringing the Word, shouldn't we say "Amen" with our lives as much as we do with our mouths? In the parable of the sower, the sower doesn't wait for the ground to say anything before he continues sowing. He just puts out the seed, and the type of soil determines the result. For the seed that falls on the wayside, or on the rocky soil, or on weedy soil, the results become evident quickly that the seed isn't going to grow. The seed that falls on the good soil is the seed that might take a while to produce results.
I hope I don't appear too crotchety. But these things trouble me, in the sense that maybe the Church is settling for less than the best. I pray the Lord doesn't allow me to settle for less than His best!
