I'm finding out that there is a side to the Internet that I haven't understood. I thought things like MySpace and Facebook were just places people could make neat pages. My kids had pages but I felt funny having one with all the kids. Now I am finding that the social aspect of the Internet has exploded and is changing everything from finding friends to even how things are marketed.
You may wonder why I am posting this on a Christian site but unless we begin to understand how these things are working and the new programs that work with them, it will severely hamper our ability to reach many of the people the Lord is asking us to reach. Many of the people He has laid on my heart have withdrawn from church and no longer even go to the Christian stores. Because of that, He is showing us new ways to reconnect with them. I feel like the current is strong and I am dipping my toe in. I can't really see where I am going but God is steering the ship so it will be an interesting trip!

Thanks for your comment Pamela. I am now a member of both FaceBook and MySpace and have a Blog so I am definitely going in those directions. The thing I didn't realize was the power of social networking. It goes back to the basic principle of if I like and trust you then I am going to be a whole lot more receptive to your recommendations than I am to a stranger's commercials. If we know each other enough for you to know what I like, you will clue me in to things that I already place value on. Get enough of those connections and it becomes an open door for marketing, witnessing, or sharing new ideas and technologies that can massively impact people with immediate results. It goes far past having a website that a few hundred people a week might visit (if you are lucky).
I believe it is one of the reasons IKtus has developed this social network but it has to go beyond just those of us who sit here. This network cross pollinates with other networks according to the groups its members belong to. As I said, I am just beginning to really understand what is happening in today's internet.
I confess, I'm still at a loss about Twitter. How do people have time to blog and Twit and Digg, etc?

I have worked in IT since 1981. I know basic stuff about the web. I remember when it became available to the public in the mid-1990s I said 'I hope and pray that the Christians do not curse this technology and use it to the fullest'. I also thought about how email would revolutionize communication for people ministering on foreign soil. I'm glad that Christians did not denounce this as evil like they did TV.
You better believe Christians led of the Lord should jump online and get with it. One of the reasons I decided to attend The Prayer Center was because I heard an audio of Gary Carpenter on his web page. He was preaching a message called Merging Wealth and Media. I absolutely love technology and want to see it used for the gospel. As you probably know when the Internet first came out no one was thinking about live broadcasting of events.
MySpace and FaceBook are IT for socializing these days. Don't forget YouTube and its Christians derivative GodTube. The young folk (and the young at heart) are out there. Blogging is another way to reach people and have discussions. This is what I have done when I have had the time.
Think about it. Jesus went where the people are. In our day the people are online. Get out there and watch what the Lord does.
