Imagine a person who thoroughly loves to sing. She does so everywhere she goes – shopping, driving their car, taking a shower, while at work, etc. But not only does he love to sing, but he is exceptionally good at it.
Now imagine this person who loves singing while doing other things has had people tell her she is great. But because he is satisfied, he doesn’t seek to become known for his talent. So virtually undiscovered, she sings at church or for a friend’s wedding, but has no drive or interest to “hit the charts.” That person considers herself complete in life.
Imagine a person who thoroughly loves to teach. He does so at church or on the internet or doing handyman repair or helping someone hang a picture. But not only does she love to teach, but she is really good at it.
Now imagine this person who loves teaching even while doing other things has had people tell him he that they enjoy learning from him. But because he is satisfied, he doesn’t seek to become known for his ability. So virtually undiscovered, she teaches at church, but has no drive or interest to become known as a lecturer. That person considers himself complete in life.
Realize that this type person has such great potential and in the eyes of the world would be considered a waste if they never become recognized. Yet in their own eyes, they have had the most wonderful life simply because they are fulfilling the desire that resides within them – giving expression to that which truly satisfies their soul. They are content – they are content by doing what they love whether they are seen as small or great.
How free are they from the pressures of life? How free are they from a false sense of responsibility to the rest of society? Why can’t they simply relax and rest in the love of what they delight? Why should they feel required to rise to a different station in life in order to please the people who think they are going to waste? When in fact it’s not the station in life that gives them pleasure, but the release of their creativity.
Now here’s the deal: When we are free from obligation, we’ll realize that the satisfaction for one day is different for another. For me, I find that I may be satisfied mowing the grass for a while, then later, resting on the couch receiving the rest that God has supplied for my body. One moment my heart is satisfied writing a blog, studying the word, or later fixing a meal. I want to simply rest as I “find I’m moving to the rhythms of his grace.”
Why then do we struggle with our spirituality by “struggling to arrive” rather than rejoicing in who he has made us to be and delighting in his finished work? Why not live our lives free from some future event as a symbol of our maturity and be content with singing and dancing and teaching and loving today? What is it in life that you truly love to do?
